Doha Debates Portal | Digital addiction: Is unplugging the only solution?

Overview

In today's hyperconnected world, adolescents spend unprecedented time on digital devices—smartphones, social media, and online learning tools. While technology brings benefits, it also poses risks, especially digital addiction. Excessive screen time negatively impacts mental, emotional, and physical health, straining family bonds. Even tech giants like Google and Meta limit their children’s screen use. A 2023 study by Qatar Foundation’s research hubs revealed that adolescents, still developing cognitive and emotional skills, are particularly vulnerable. At DIFI's Global Conference, discussions will explore if families can reshape digital habits or if technology is too ingrained to control. Should families implement digital detoxes, or could these measures harm academic and social life? And should parents lead by example before imposing limits on their children?
