Panel Discussion: Diplomacy and Influence: A Reading of the British Presence in the Gulf

Overview

What were the diplomatic tools through which British influence expanded in the Gulf?

Dr. Aisha Hadi Al Rashdi, Acting Head of the Department of International Affairs at the College of Arts and Sciences, Qatar University, will present examples of the diplomatic tools that strengthened British–Gulf relations through soft power and diplomatic practices. These included protocols for receiving guests, dining etiquette, and the exchange of official gifts, as well as their significance in reinforcing connection and mutual appreciation among the parties involved, particularly amid competition with other regional powers.

The panel discussion will be moderated by Ikhlas Ahmed, Community Engagement Specialist at the Heritage Library. The session will also highlight key books available in the Heritage Library’s collections on Qatari–British relations and British influence in the Gulf region.

This session will be held in the Auditorium at Qatar National Library.
