Parent Orientation: Understanding & Supporting Your Child

Overview

This orientation session aims to help parents develop a clearer understanding of intellectual disability and how it may affect a child’s learning and daily life.

Participants will explore children’s individual strengths, needs, and developmental differences in a supportive and practical way. The session will introduce simple strategies to support learning, communication, behaviour, and participation at home and in the community.

Parents will also learn ways to encourage independence in daily routines, self-care, decision-making, and functional life skills. Practical examples will be shared to help families respond to challenges while building on each child’s abilities and progress.
